چکیده

The tendency to choose an optional intradimensional (ID) and extradimensional (ED) shift was investigated at five developmental levels: preschool, kindergarten, second grade, sixth grade, and college. Over this range, a significantly increasing trend to select an ID shift and a significantly decreasing trend to choose an ED shift were observed. ID 5s when compared to ED 5s exhibited higher IQ's and learned both the initial and shift discriminations more rapidly. A comparison between the present optional ID-ED study and a previous optional reversal-ED experiment revealed that the ontogenetic changes are similar. The results are interpreted to be consistent with the coordinated single-unit and mediational S-R formulation.

A critical role for the anterior thalamus in directing attention to task-relevant stimuli.

The prefrontal cortex mediates adaption to changing environmental contingencies. The anterior thalamic nuclei, which are closely interconnected with the prefrontal cortex, are important for rodent spatial memory, but their potential role in executive function has received scant attention. The current study examined whether the anterior thalamic nuclei are involved in attentional processes akin ...

Neural Network Models of Discrimination Shifts

The importance of discrimination shifts to learning and developmental psychology is highlighted. Basic tasks used in continuous and total change paradigms are presented, and major theoretical accounts are briefly reviewed. The lack of a general and comprehensive interpretation of human shift learning is identified, and a recent model based on neural network research is described. This model sug...

Switching between colors and shapes on the basis of positive and negative feedback: an fMRI and EEG study on feedback-based learning.

A crucial element of testing hypotheses about rules for behavior is the use of performance feedback. In this study, we used fMRI and EEG to test the role of medial prefrontal cortex (PFC) and dorsolateral (DL) PFC in hypothesis testing using a modified intradimensional/extradimensional rule shift task. Eighteen adults were asked to infer rules about color or shape on the basis of positive and n...

Asymmetry of attentional set in rhesus monkeys learning colour and shape discriminations

We trained rhesus monkeys on six visual discrimination problems using stimuli that varied in both shape and colour. For one group of animals shape was always relevant in these six problems, and colour always irrelevant, and for the other animals vice versa. During these "intradimensional shifts" (ID) the problems were learned at equal rates by the two groups, shape-relevant and colour-relevant....

Shape Shifting: Local Landmarks Interfere With Navigation by, and Recognition of, Global Shape

An influential theory of spatial navigation states that the boundary shape of an environment is preferentially encoded over and above other spatial cues, such that it is impervious to interference from alternative sources of information. We explored this claim with 3 intradimensional-extradimensional shift experiments, designed to examine the interaction of landmark and geometric features of th...
